AT&T DEPLOYS VERSANT ODBMS FOR INTERNAL COLLECTION SYSTEM

Internal Chargeback System Handles Millions of Messages Monthly

Menlo Park, CA -- February 26, 1996 -- Versant Object Technology Corporation (Versant), the leading supplier of object data for multi-user distributed operations, today announced the deployment of a major new record collection system at AT&T. The General Purpose Collector, based on the Versant ODBMS, is responsible for processing and reconciling all internal voice service records for the large telecommunications supplier and allows the firm to deploy new services more quickly than in the past. AT&T is one of its own largest customers for telecommunications services, including voice, data, and teleconferencing.

"Versant's proof is the success of our customers," said David Banks, president and CEO of Versant. "AT&T is one of the most advanced technology companies in the world. Their use of Versant for such a critical application helps them extend their competitive advantage by addressing real customer needs in a responsive and cost-effective manner."

The AT&T project to update their existing collection system started more than a year ago. To gain both flexibility in meeting internal customer requirements and the ability to support chargeback for new products quickly, the Corporate ITS team adopted object technology, including the Versant ODBMS. Versant was selected from among more than a dozen relational and object database providers due to its ease-of-development, high quality technical support, high concurrency and performance, and Versant's use throughout telecommunications and other industries. Initial deployment of the collection system took place in August 1995.

"We adopted Versant in order to be able to respond more quickly to critical demands from our customers," said Tim Schlagheck, project database manager at AT&T. "The object database allowed us to get the system into deployment more quickly and reduce maintenance costs over the life cycle of the GPC project. Overall, we've surpassed the team's expectations for this project."

The Corporate ITS collection system is responsible for consolidating information from all of AT&T's internally managed switches and for passing information along to other corporate ITS processes which prepare financial transactions. The complexity of the system stems from the vast number of services offered and the levels of detail required for reporting. AT&T also expects to keep several months of data readily available in the Versant ODBMS to facilitate operational and financial analysis.

"Versant has been a leader in supplying advanced data management solutions to telecommunications for several years," said Barry Wetmore, director of telecommunications at Versant. "With the success of the AT&T collection application under our belt, Versant is showing the breadth of impact that object databases are having throughout the telecommunications industry. No other object database provider can come close to the impact of Versant."

Unique among ODBMS providers, Versant 's success comes from targeting network management applications, especially in the telecommunications arena. The focus has allowed Versant to provide the most complete and appropriate solution for these demanding revenue-critical applications. The company supports low-level management applications for organizations like Alcatel, MCI, Ascom Ericsson, and Hitachi, as well as high-level customer and service-oriented applications for customers like GTE, Ameritech, Sprint, and AT&T. Beyond telecom, Versant has made significant inroads, counting among its many customers Informix (Informix NewEra repository), Siemens Medical Systems (medical imaging systems), and Scotiabank (branch banking operations).
